Founder of the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa began working in the slums of Calcutta in India in 1948. She went on to establish orphanages, hospitals and hospices dedicated to the sick and the poor. Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Although sometimes controversial she was posthumously beatified by the Catholic Church in 2003.
