In 1855 Hughes developed one of the first concepts for a printing telegraph, which was adopted as the international standard by the Western Union Telegraph Company in 1857. In Europe Hughes’ telegraph became the standard. Later in his career he did work on sound transmission that became an early version of the microphone.
